Edward 'Ted' Ruddock (second left), outgoing managing director of the Tryall Club, with the Tenacity plaque honouring his support of that organisation, received a recent farewell function held by Tryall staff members. Others in the photo are (from left) Hope Markes, Valerie Hutton and Laura Bryan.

'Edward Ruddock says goodbye to Tryall Club

Edward 'Ted' Ruddock has resigned his position as managing director of the prestigious 2,000-acre Tryall Club in Hanover after nine years in that position. Having earned the distinction of being the longest-serving managing director in the club's 55-year history, Tyrall's board and past president Dalt Hicks has praised Ruddock's professional manner, lauding his "high integrity" and "excellent interpersonal skills."

His sentiments were cemented by past president of the club, Michael Weatherly, who described Ruddock's integral role in vastly improving the property's operations, proving to be the most effective leader during his tenure from 1997 to 2007.

The tourism stalwart who is well respected in his field has stressed that although he has resigned from the Tryall Club, he is not retiring from the hospitality business and is looking forward to exploring new challenges and participating further in the development of Jamaica's growing industry which he has been involved in since he first arrived in the island from England in the 1960s.

Ted Ruddock is credited with transforming the Tryall Club's tourism, offering from 56 homes and 42 hotel rooms to 72 upscale villas and 13 great house suites, causing the villa values to move from a low of US$195,000 to over US$3 million for some properties.

The real estate development which had been dormant for years suddenly began to grow after world heavyweight boxing champion Lennox Lewis built his dream house on the property and 15 new villas were constructed.

expanded its facilities

When Ted Ruddock took over in 1997, Tryall was mainly recognised as a golfing destination. Today, it has expanded its facilities to become a favourite of family vacationers who enjoy tennis, swimming, hiking and non-motorised water sports. The golf course has been substantially upgraded and the beautiful great house (circa 1836) has been elegantly refurbished.

On the other hand, four underpasses were constructed under the North Coast Highway to safely link the north and south sections of the vast property. Under his stewardship, the beach was extensively upgraded and over US$500,000 invested in improving the coastal water quality.

Both the Beach Patio Restaurant and Almond Tree bar have been renovated, along with the ground's landscape. According to Ruddock, the Tryall Club now enjoys a high-return clientele and the positive comments from repeat guests extol Tryall's current mode of operation as a well-rounded upscale club destination.

Former Ritz-Carlton General Manager Doug Brooks has been appointed to succeed Ruddock as CEO of the property.
